Some
recent information about Conakry. Nightlife in Conakry is
excellent. Girls are available everywhere. Nightclubs are of
course the main place to pick up girls. Girls also hang around
major hotels looking for “love.” Actually, almost all girls that
you see are available, including hotel personnel, and waitresses
in restaurants. But with them, you need to make them believe that
you care about them. Bar girls ask normally 20000 – 100000 francs
(4-20 €) for LT. Almost every girl will go with 20000. I never
paid more than 40000.
It is a buyer's market in Conakry.
Most of the girls will go home alone after an evening. I never
even tried ST there, but I assume that it would have to be cheap.
Most bar girls are ready for anything... BBBJ, anal, with many
girls at the same time, anything goes. Generally girls are pretty,
assuming that you like black girls. Susu girls are like 'coffee
with milk' colour, but there are many completely black ones
available also. Most of the bar girls are 6's, 7’s or 8’s. But I
had some 9’s as well.
All girls want to have a long term
relationship. If you go for this, they will quickly find all the
usual reasons to ask for more money (mother is sick, rent, school
fee, mobile phone stolen, etc.). But the money goes to a good
purpose, so who cares. It is good to speak at least a little
French, but most girls understand some English also. I had good
experiences in all the nightclubs where I visited. Action starts
late, around midnight. If you are early, the best place is called
Bembeya, which is loaded with girls at 10 p.m. Other good places
are Genesia, Climax, Timi’s, Atlantis and Le Loft. Just to name a
few. But these places are quiet before midnight. After midnight,
all are full of girls.
Generally, Conakry is safe. But
walking alone at night while drunk might not be wise. Taxis are in
poor condition, but those are cheap also. At night time, the
problem is police/military check points. They will stop your taxi
and will not let you go until you give them money. Normally 5000 –
10000 francs (1 – 2 €) per police is enough. I did not find a way
to leave without paying. One time I refused to pay, and they kept
me there two hours (luckily, I had good company). Then I decided
to pay. If you want to avoid the police, it is necessary to stay
in nightclubs close to your hotel.
I stayed there in two
hotels: Novotel and Camayenne. Both are girl-friendly. Girl will
need to leave her ID card at reception and that's it. Nothing
is charged. Of course the hotels themselves were expensive
~60€ per night. I have no idea about cheaper accommodation, but I
am sure that it is available. My company paid my bills, so I was
not worried about the hotel price.
Food is great in
Conakry. Normally, a meal in a nice restaurant costs 1 – 4 €,
and with four euro you will eat prawns or T-bone steak. Beer is 1€
(imported) or 0,5 € for local. Avoid restaurants in big hotels.
They charge ten times the amount compared to other restaurants. I
spent three months in Guinea and I was just starting to find
out its secrets. I will go again soon. I recommend that
everyone should go. (Review # 13543)

Women
to be deported following police raids in Antigua--late August,
2005
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: In a move designed to curb the
rapidly growing practice of prostitution in Antigua, police raided
several known night houses and took a number of women and men into
custody.
One proprietor [said] that police officers broke
into his establishment just before dawn on Tuesday morning and
told him that they were carrying out a search for stolen items,
marijuana as well as unlicensed firearms, etc. According to
reports, some four establishments were "tumbled" in like manner,
ending with the arrest of several persons.
The action by
the police has been met with mixed reaction, with some commending
the authorities for "doing something" about the thriving trade of
prostitution.
However, some argue that the rights of some
50 women, from a number of Caribbean countries who will be
deported, is being violated.
During a recent press
conference, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Delano Christopher,
admitted that it would be very difficult to prove that
prostitution is being committed as the law states that those who
are involved must be caught in the act and that money must be
passed and seen being passed, as prostitution involves sex for
money.
However, police admitted that they found no sexual
activity at any of the places raided on Tuesday.
The women
were taken to the police Headquarters where they were questioned
for hours and released.
Shortly after, some 50 of them
were picked up by Immigration and told that they will be deported
within 48-hours.
News of this sparked reaction from the
women who are nationals of Guyana, Jamaica, The Dominican Republic
and Trinidad and Tobago.
"We have not committed any crime,
we all have time in our passports so how can they just deport us
just so?," said one Jamaican national who promised to call her
country's Honorary Consulate on the matter.
The police
said the ladies had time in their passports and he therefore could
not see how they could be deported just like that.
However, the country's Chief Immigration Officer Colonel
Clyde Walker was quoted by the Antigua Sun Newspaper as saying,
“Yes they have time, but it doesn’t mean anything. Once you are
found in a brothel that time of the morning – what are you in
there for?”
Walker said that the women will be deported
within 48 hours, “once we can get flights.”
Meanwhile
[...] two nationals of Jamaica have secured the service of two
lawyers to challenge the legality of their deportation.

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: Relief supplies sent
to this hurricane stricken island are being used by some members
of the security forces in what is now a lucrative sex trade.
Reports from within the security forces are that food
hampers are often removed from the relief supply center based at
the Special Services Unit (SSU) in the south of the island and
given to young women in exchange for sex.
Under the laws
of Grenada prostitution is a criminal offence.
Scores of
women are often seen in the south of St. George's accompanied by
both local and regional military personnel armed with short guns
and M-16s, in some cases along with food hampers at a time when
the ordinary Grenadians are tear-gassed and chased while sitting
outside their houses in St. George's.
A Trinidad military
officer in the presence of two locals said he is appalled at the
behaviour of the other officers who are supposed to be the
guardians of the relief supplies and the citizens.
He also
spoke of some local officers who fill their private vehicles with
relief materials after officials from the National Emergency and
Relief Organization (NERO), now popularly known as ZERO due to
their poor performance during the hurricane, have left the
compound.
There are several more horror stories
surrounding the supplies sent to Grenada for those seriously
affected by Ivan the Terrible. Like some goods coming from Guyana
marked NNP, which is the ruling party on the island.
Several bottles of water on the compound of the Industrial
Development Corporation are marked NNP and is fast becoming the
talk of the town.
There are complaints that a number of
people are yet to receive tarpaulins to cover their houses while
others have received seven and eight.
[And so the cherry
is popped with this first posting for the nation of
teen Grenada]

Guyana accuses US of being unfair in report on human
trafficking--June, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana. Guyana on
Wednesday accused the United States of being "unfair" in its
assessment of Guyana's efforts to combat human trafficking but
promised to fast-track plans to avoid a cut in funding from US and
international lending agencies.
"That Guyana has been
ranked 'tier three' in the US State Department's report
disappoints me. I think it's very unfair with all the work that we
have been doing," Guyana's Minister of Labour and Human Services,
Bibi Shadick, told the opening of a seminar on trafficking in
persons.
She recalled that it was Guyana that last year
asked the Inter American Commission of Women (IACW) to stop
focussing only on human trafficking in Latin America because the
Caribbean has "its own special brand of the problem."
The
seminar is one of seven planned for Guyana, Bahamas, Barbados,
Netherlands Antilles, St Lucia and Suriname by the International
Organisation for Migration and the IACW, an agency of the
Organisation of American States (OAS) to craft a regional strategy
for combatting the problem.
"The Caribbean region, itself,
has not been well looked at in terms of understanding the context
and certainly countries were asking for and requesting assistance
to be able to develop a response," IOM Project Manager for
trafficking in persons, Ashley Garrett, said.
Shadick said
Guyanese police and other authorities have been raiding mining
camps and other areas to rescue mainly indigenous women from
prostitution, cheap and forced labour, as well as prosecuting
offenders under existing laws.
She said efforts to erase
Guyana from tier-three of the US State Department's global report
on human trafficking included drafting legislation on human
trafficking, training people to identify and report instances of
the crime, and educate the public about the issue.
"Rest
assured, we're not doing this because we want to satisfy the US
State Department that we're doing something about it," Shadick
said, however.
